A lot of people first notice a problem with a bay window when a crack appears and seems to keep coming back no matter how many times it has been filled. Others spot gaps around the frame or brickwork that doesn’t look quite as straight as it once did.
Bay windows have always been a bit different to the rest of the house. Because they project outwards, they can be affected by movement in ways that other parts of the property are not. We’ve seen cases where the issue had been developing slowly for years before anyone realised there was an underlying structural problem.
Sometimes the repair is relatively straightforward. In other situations, further investigation is needed to understand exactly what is causing the movement. The important thing is not to assume that every crack means the same thing.
Where work is required, the aim is to stabilise the area, deal with any damaged masonry and make sure the bay window has the support it needs going forward. The extent of the repairs will depend on what is found once the area has been properly assessed.
